I am co-hosting a book club, called Holy Housewives, over on my personal blog. We are reading the book, Passionate Housewives, Desperate for God. I have not agreed (by any means) with everything in the book but this last week we looked at the chapter on quiet time.
It is hard with a capital “H” to find quiet time when the kids are little and you can’t even find time to go to the bathroom by yourself! It is hard to find quiet time when the kids are older and you are the mom taxi to a bazillion different activities. It is hard to find quiet time when you work outside the home and then come home and have work to do inside the home as well.
God never promised it would be easy to spend time with Him. He just promises the rewards are great! I have listed below some of the ways that work for me.
Here are some ways you can squeeze quiet time into your day:
- Write your favorite Scriptures down and take them with you. Read them in traffic, in waiting rooms, in the grocery line.
- Join a challenge like reading the Bible in 90 days (a great resource is Mom’s Toolbox). Joining in with others and having a reading plan will help keep you on track.
- Find a favorite teacher on TV or the radio. Listen to podcasts. Write down the Scriptures they reference and then go back and read them for yourself.
- Keep a prayer journal. Write down your prayers to God. It is so awesome to go back and see the answered prayers (even in ways we didn’t think were answers at the time).
- Join a Bible study or small group at your church. We are created for connection and relationship. Joining a group will give you that extra dose of accountability that can keep you on track.
- Pray without ceasing. Pray in the car, pray in the bathroom..some of my best times with God are in the shower. It is quiet there
- Have a family devotion time. We vary this so the kids remain interested. Sometimes we watch a DVD, sometimes we read from a book like The Chronicles of Narnia, sometimes we read from the Bible, sometimes we do an application activity. Encourage your kids to spend time in God’s Word so this quiet time habit is developed in their lives from a young age.
