Decluttering your mind from wounds

[#9: Edit Options>MightyAdsense>Adsense Code]

Wounds.  Deep, festering, painful wounds.  We all have them.  And, I’m not talking about the kinds of wounds that require a band-aid or stitches.  I am referring to the wounds that require the care of the Master Healer.

The words of David in Psalm 38 describe what wounds do to our physical and spiritual health.  I encourage you to read that passage when you have time and ask God to reveal to you any wounds that you are not aware of or have ignored for too long.

So, how do we declutter our lives of our old wounds?  I do not want to seem to oversimplify what is truly a process but the answer in one word is Jesus.

Healing our wounds is one of the reasons He came to this earth.  Listen to the words in Isaiah 61:1-3:

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.  He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners…to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion–to bestow on them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning and a garment of praise instead of despair.  They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor. {emphasis mine}

I know from walking through the healing process with God that it is not easy. I also know it is so worth it!

Here are some things I encourage you to do as you allow God to pierce through walls built up around your heart:

  • Let someone know that you are letting God in.  There are parts of the healing journey that are just plain yucky.  You will need a shoulder to cry on, voice to calm and arms to wrap around you in a healing hug.  God did not create us to be long rangers…we are created for relationship.  Find someone you trust to walk through your journey of healing together.
  • Make a Bible verse book.  I went to the dollar store a long time ago and got a photo album that fits in my purse.  I write down encouraging verses, quotes and prayers on index cards and keep them in that book.  That way I always have access to God’s Word wherever and whenever I need it.
  • Keep a journal.  I love to write down the things I am grateful for, my prayer requests, sermon notes- you name it, I journal it.  I have volumes of journals that outline my walk with God through this life.  Sometimes when we are dealing with wounds, particularly the kinds that need debriding, our minds can become cluttered with negative thoughts, guilt, shame, anger- all the emotions the enemy would love for us to stew in.  Writing those feelings down in a journal allows me to get them out of my mind and relinquish them to God.
  • Seek Christian counseling.  There is nothing shameful about seeking professional help.  Some of the wounds that I had to allow God access to were too big for me to handle on my own, to much for my husband to process alone, to personal to share with friends {at the time}.  Having Christian counseling was one of the best things I did and that brief time of counseling has stayed with me throughout the years and the principles I learned I still apply to my life today.

John 10:10 reminds us that Jesus came so we could have abundant life.  Not a miserable, sad, depressed and defeated life but abundant life.  Let Him heal your wounds and declutter your mind so that you can step into all that He has in store for you!

I know how hard taking the first step can be.  Some of my healing journey is documented here and I am always willing to pray, email, listen and support anyone who is ready to let Jesus have access to their wounds.  You can email me at melissa at organizedlifebydesign.com, find me on Twitter, Facebook or leave a comment.  I would be honored to pray for any of you!

Best of…

Frugal Travel Plans

In the early morning hours tomorrow, our family will be hitting the road for the 736 mile journey to see my family in Florida.  This is a trip that I have made countless times since childhood both by car and by plane.

With a family, we find it easier to drive down for a myriad of reasons.  But, road trips can be expensive.  Here are some of the ways we save money:

  • Pack a cooler.  We pack a cooler with lots of ice and bottled water. Then I buy the generic boxes of lemonade mix, iced tea mix, etc. so the kids don’t complain about “just” having water to drink.  We can buy a 24 pack of bottled water for $2.97 at WalMart when we would pay .99+ for each bottle at a gas station or convenience store.
  • Pack breakfast. Eating out for breakfast is unnecessary.  I make a slew of muffins beforehand and bring along mini bagels and granola bars as well.  This gives the kids breakfast and provides snacks for the ride down.
  • Scout out stops.  I plan our stops beforehand by visiting restaurant, coupon and travel sites to get coupons for places along our route.  It is also often worth it to pick up a coupon book at rest stops.

What do you do to make road trips affordable?

Finding Time for Quiet Time

I am co-hosting a book club, called Holy Housewives, over on my personal blog.  We are reading the book, Passionate Housewives, Desperate for God.  I have not agreed (by any means) with everything in the book but this last week we looked at the chapter on quiet time.

It is hard with a capital “H” to find quiet time when the kids are little and you can’t even find time to go to the bathroom by yourself!    It is hard to find quiet time when the kids are older and you are the mom taxi to a bazillion different activities.  It is hard to find quiet time when you work outside the home and then come home and have work to do inside the home as well.

God never promised it would be easy to spend time with Him.  He just promises the rewards are great!  I have listed below some of the ways that work for me.

Here are some ways you can squeeze quiet time into your day:

  • Write your favorite Scriptures down and take them with you.  Read them in traffic, in waiting rooms, in the grocery line.
  • Join a challenge like reading the Bible in 90 days (a great resource is Mom’s Toolbox).  Joining in with others and having a reading plan will help keep you on track.
  • Find a favorite teacher on TV or the radio.  Listen to podcasts.  Write down the Scriptures they reference and then go back and read them for yourself.
  • Keep a prayer journal.  Write down your prayers to God.  It is so awesome to go back and see the answered prayers (even in ways we didn’t think were answers at the time).
  • Join a Bible study or small group at your church.  We are created for connection and relationship.  Joining a group will give you that extra dose of accountability that can keep you on track.
  • Pray without ceasing. Pray in the car, pray in the bathroom..some of my best times with God are in the shower.  It is quiet there :)
  • Have a family devotion time.  We vary this so the kids remain interested.  Sometimes we watch a DVD, sometimes we read from a book like The Chronicles of Narnia, sometimes we read from the Bible, sometimes we do an application activity.  Encourage your kids to spend time in God’s Word so this quiet time habit is developed in their lives from a young age.

What are some ways you make time for God in your everyday life?

Traveling Light

Traveling is a reality of summer so on the radio show Friday we will be interviewing professional organizer and owner of Athens Home Organizer, Julie Marlow.  Be sure to tune in to talk travel tips, particularly for air travel and I will be giving my road trip tips.

Here are a few tips for packing from Good Housekeeping Magazine (and some from yours truly) in the meantime:

  • Roll it up.  Minimize wrinkles by rolling, not folding, three to four clothing pieces together, with knits on the inside.
  • Sock it in. Make every crevice count: stow chunky necklaces and jewelry in socks; pack them inside shoes.  I have also used an old eyeglass case for jewelry and stowed them inside shoes.  If you are flying, wear your bulkiest shoes onboard to fit in extra flats or sandals.
  • Prep ahead.  Don’t bother filling out a luggage tag every time you travel.  Make a reusable one by laminating business cards back to back.  Punch a hole in either end; secure to your case.  I bought an inexpensive luggage tag at Target and use it over and over as well.
  • Snag your bag.  Ensure that you’ll come home with the right suitcase with a ribbon tied to the handle.  It’ll be a cinch to spot at the terminal.  I bought a second hand suitcase with a loud floral print- have never seen anyone with the same print and can spot my bag from a mile away =)
  • Wash away.  Why bother to unpack travel size toiletries when you’ll not use them until next time you travel?  Keep them stored in a kit or an airport-friendly clear plastic zip-seal bag to simply grab and go.

What works for you when packing for vacation?
